I feel that I do a pretty good job of using the resources that I have to integrate technology into my classroom, but I am hoping to learn new ways to make what I have even more valuable and to be able to use it more effectively in reading and writing. I’m the go-to technology person in my building and usually the first teacher to “try” something new. Being the first to learn how to use something gives my students an advantage over students in the other classes. The knowledge and skills that I obtain in this course will help me and my students to stay ahead of the game in reading and writing through technology.
I am excited about the tools we are going to learn to use through this class. I look forward to digging deeper into the resources that the Pearson book has to support reading and writing and learning how to use them. "The most profound technologies are those that disappear-they weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it" (Solution Tree). I found this interesting because some of the technologies that the students don't even notice are the "profound" technologies that weren't always around. Some of our students, as well as some of us, could never imagine life without them!
It is important to try a different variety of methods and tools. While I think some of the "old fashioned" teaching methods still have validity, technology can certainly enhance those methods. Being set in one's ways shows lack of willingness to adapt. Our students are constantly changing and teachers need to be flexible enough to adapt with them. That means being willing to bring more technology into the classroom and use it in a meaningful way. I love that you are willing to experiment and try out new things. As with most things I think there needs to be a balance. Bringing technology into the classroom is wonderful if it is used to enhance learning. Sadly, I think sometimes schools rush out to purchase hardware/software just so they can say they have it without giving serious thought to how it will be used.
ReplyDeleteThe book does make a great point about how most profound items are those that we do not even really think about. Perhaps the opposite can be true. Those things you really struggle to find a way to use in the classroom are the things that will have least meaning :)
I want to be that person you are: the first to try the newest technological devices or ideas. I want to be that "go to" person in the building. That's an exciting place to be, I think. Best of luck to you.
